Duration changes what is being measured, not just how long

This is the point almost every click speed site glosses over. A one second test samples your peak rate and nothing else: there is no time for fatigue and no time to settle into a rhythm, so the number reads high and swings wildly between attempts. A hundred second test averages your peak with your exhaustion, and the result is a stamina figure wearing a speed figure's clothes. These are not the same measurement at different scales, they are different measurements.

That is why ClickStorm publishes a separate benchmark scale for each duration rather than one scale for everything. Judging a sixty second result against a five second scale makes a perfectly good run look mediocre, and judging a one second burst against the ten second scale makes an ordinary burst look elite. Both mistakes are common and both come from a single shared table.

There is also an arithmetic quirk at the short end that is worth knowing. The first click starts the clock and also counts, which credits you with one click for zero elapsed time. Over ten seconds that inflates your score by 0.1 CPS and nobody notices. Over one second it inflates it by a full 1.0 CPS, which on a typical result is more than ten percent. Every site in this niche uses the same convention, so scores stay comparable with each other, but a one second number should be read as the least trustworthy figure on the site.

Which duration to pick

For a single honest number, use ten seconds. It is long enough that a lucky start cannot dominate the result and short enough that stamina is not the limiting factor, and it is by a distance the most widely used benchmark, which means more people have a ten second score to compare against than any other.

Use five seconds when you are learning a technique. It is long enough to expose whether your rhythm is real and short enough to repeat many times in a practice session without your forearm giving out. Use one or two seconds only when you are specifically curious about your peak, and read the result with the caveat above in mind.

The long runs answer a different question. If your ten second score and your sixty second score are close together, you have a technique you can actually hold. If the sixty second figure collapses, the gap between the two is more informative than either number on its own: it tells you the limit is endurance rather than hand speed, and endurance is the more trainable of the two.

Comparing your own results honestly

Match three things before comparing any two scores: the duration, the device and the technique. A one second burst on a gaming mouse using drag clicking and a thirty second run on a laptop trackpad are not the same activity, and putting the two numbers side by side tells you nothing.

Because personal bests are stored per duration in your own browser, the most useful comparison available to you is against yourself on the same setup. That is also the only comparison here with no hidden variables in it, which is worth more than a leaderboard place would be.
